1846
Király utca 36 – A House of History
Király Street 36 is a classicist residential building designed by the renowned architect József Hild and completed in 1846–47 for tobacco merchant József Medetz. With its timeless façade and elegant proportions, the house has stood witness to nearly two centuries of Budapest’s history – from the rise of Pest into a modern capital, through the revolution of 1848–49, and the defining moments of the 20th century.

Among its most notable residents wasAttila Petschauer, Olympic fencing champion, who was born here in 1904. He went on to win gold with the Hungarian sabre team in Amsterdam (1928) and Los Angeles (1932). His extraordinary life later inspiredSunshine(Napfény íze), a film by Academy Award-winning directorIstván Szabó, adding a cinematic layer to the house’s legacy.

The building itself has long been part of the cultural fabric of Király Street – once called the “Street of Kings.” Surrounded by theatres, cafés, and the vibrant life of Pest, it carried the spirit of the neighbourhood’s creativity and resilience.
Today, after careful renewal, this Hild-designed house opens its doors as a boutique hotel. Guests are invited not only to stay within its walls but to become part of its living history – where past and present meet, and every corner tells a story.
